Getting around and about on the island of Capri
In the busiest months of the year, from April to October, the circulation on the island of non-residents' cars, motorbikes, and scooters is not permitted. Exceptions are made for vehicles bearing foreign number plates and driven by the owner.
Vehicles can be parked in one of the many car parks or garages located in the vicinity of the ports of Naples (the largest and most economic being the Parcheggio Brin) and Sorrento.
A great deal of the island of Capri is pedestrianized. All those zones accessible by car are also well served by public transport.
Once they arrive in Marina Grande, the port of Capri, visitors can entrust their luggage to porters who will transport it from the hydrofoil or ferry along the docks to the taxi stand, hotel, or private residence of the visitor's choice.
On request, many hotels will send a representative to greet guests and accompany them all the way to the hotel.
Funicular railway
The red funicular railway train enables visitors to reach the center of Capri in just 5 minutes, via a panoramic route over the lemon trees and vegetable gardens.
Trains depart every 15 minutes or more frequently still when demand is particularly high. In rush hours passengers are likely to have to queue before boarding.
Small dogs are allowed on the train, but must be muzzled and kept on a lead.
Tickets can be purchased at the Funicular railway ticket office in the center of Capri or in Marina Grande, to the left of the port, where all the ticket offices for the various hydrofoil and ferry companies are located.
Bus
Little orange buses travel along the routes Capri-Anacapri, Capri-Marina Piccola, Capri-Marina Grande (the so-called S.Costanzo line), Capri-Damecuta, Marina Piccola-Anacapri (during the summer season only), Anacapri-Grotta Azzura, and Anacapri-Faro.
Buses run frequently, but times are subject to variation.
Tickets can be purchased directly on board, at the Funicular railway ticket office in Marina Grande, or in Piazza Martiri d’Ungheria, close to the Piazzetta, where the bus station is situated. Tickets are valid for all forms of public transport. 3 types of ticket are available: corsa singola (single), orario (hourly) and giornaliero (daily).
During the high season it is normal to find long queues at the main bus station: the routes taken by the buses can also be followed on foot, offering pleasurable and often extremely panoramic walks.
Taxi
Taxi stands are located at the port, in the Piazzetta, and all the principal places where tourists gather. When taxis are not transporting clients, they can be hailed along the road by the wave of a hand. Capri's taxi drivers are usually extremely courteous and more than willing to drive customers all around the island: an ideal way to see Capri for those with little time at their disposal.
The taxis, always kept in perfect condition and sparklingly clean, are often open-top vehicles, thus allowing passengers to enjoy the atmosphere of the island to the full. Passengers are advised to travel with a hat or head scarf and sunglasses.
Fares are established by the taximeter.
Prices of tours of the island of Capri by taxi are, on the other hand, negotiable: decided upon with the driver according to the time of year, the length of the tour, the itinerary etc.
Scooter
Scooters (and helmets) can be hired at the port, in Capri, and Anacapri. Bikes can be rented for a few hours, for an entire day or for a few days, in which case clients can usually obtain a really good deal.
Monte Solaro Chair lift
A chair lift connects the center of Anacapri with the peak of Monte Solaro, some 589 meters above sea level and the highest point of the island.
An exhilarating experience is had by all those who choose to board the chair lift and journey high above the roof tops and vineyards, over the lush Mediterranean foliage and trees to the top of the mountain.
From March to October the facility is open from 09.30 to sunset; from November to February from 10.15 to 15.00. The chairlift is closed on Tuesdays.
By sea
There are lots of ways to explore the dramatically beautiful coast of Capri.
All kinds of craft are available: dinghies, traditional wooden 'Gozzi', motorboats, and sailing boats. Those in possession of a nautical licence can rent or charter boats without a crew although, especially whilst on vacation, many choose to leave the responsibility of navigating the waters around Capri to an experienced local sailor, and simply sit back and enjoy the ride.
During a tour around the island time can be made for a meal in one of the many sea edge restaurants specialising in fish and sea food dishes; or for a delicious picnic lunch on board - often prepared by the crew members themselves.
Boats are equipped with ice boxes or small refrigerators in which to keep drinks cool.
Most bathing establishments offer customers the opportunity to rent a canoe or pedalò for an hour or two.
Tours around the island of Capri are arranged for both individuals and large groups. The classic tour lasts approximately an hour and 45 minutes and includes a stop at the Grotta Azzurra, to be accessed aboard one of the traditional rowing boats. In high season visitors may find they have to wait for as long as an hour before being able to enter the legendary cave.
Those coming to Capri with their own boat can moor at the island’s well equipped tourist port.
